Empathic listening/responding is the core skill. When couples practice this over time, they begin naturally to tune into their partners feelings before they even begin to think about their own perspective. It has a way of undermining our usual and typical non conscious quick defensive responding. If we really grasp the underlying feeling motivations, no matter the subject, it would be hard to respond defensively. i think that it's best to listen to the underlying feeling more than what it's about.

Ed - sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Some issues with our blog. There are MML classes periodically in the Vallejo area. Best is to check at www.camarriage.com and click on the tab that says "classes & trainings", then click on "Classes". Contact me directly at bento@camarriage.com if you have any other questions. I'll be teaching an MML Facilitator Training in Stockton on Mar. 26-27-28 -- that's also listed at camarriage.com, "classes & trainings". Hope that helps, and again, sorry for the delay. - Bento

Hi Bento,

What a relief it is to be listened to! When Jim shows understanding I feel important to him, helped to express myself and problems disappear! It always amazes me.

When will we all learn what a powerful skill active listening/ reflective listening/ showing understanding is? Wouldn't it change the world? It sure changed our relationship!

Michael and I finished our phone coaching sessions with Ken this week. We completed the worksheet for Problem Solving about our second dialog. The problem was supposed to be a low impact one, but it turned out to be of a small part of a substantive, vital facet of our marriage.

We had been to marriage counseling with three counselors over the years, and to marriage enrichment groups and seminars, but the MML followed by the phone coaching has helped us immeasurably! Perhaps even saving us from divorce. We were beleagured and unable to solve our problem, no matter what we tried, and ended up in argument many times. We were getting so tired of what was happening, that we were not even bothering to argue any more.( The emotional divorce had begun).

Our thanks to the CAmarriage and to Ken and Irma for the instruction and especially the follow up phone coaching. Those follow ups kept us on purpose, and did not allow for
procrastination, or letting things simply go undone!
With deepest gratitude,
Karen

I would like to add my comments to Karen's to express my appreciation for the dedication and sensitive, caring work which Ken and Irma did in working with us as phone coaches, following up from our MML session earlier this year. Both Ken and Irma showed incredible sensitivity, understanding and expertise in working with us through our issues during the phone coaching sessions. When we hit a difficult patch during our forth session, Ken even volunteered to help us with an additional, fifth session. This session was an essential part in our work to improve our marriage. We thank you for the MML program in general and especially for the loving and beneficial help of Ken and Irma. God Bless you all and thanks. Michael
